Parents as Teachers

Your child was born to learn!

Enroll in Parents as Teachers today.

Washington County Parents as Teachers (PAT) is an early childhood parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child turns three.  PAT is free and available to all families in Washington County regardless of need or income and participation is voluntary.

The philosophy of PAT is to empower parents to give their child the best possible start in life, to increase the parent feeling competent and confident, to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to help detect developmental problems through periodic developmental screenings.  Parents as Teachers believes that all young children and their families deserve the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of any demographic, geographic or economic considerations.  Families receive weekly/monthly in-home visits which are determined by the family and the Parent Educator.

Topics include neuroscience research on brain development, milestones to expect, attachment, sensory overload, shaken baby, temper tantrums, temperament traits, potty training, developmental expectations in language, motor, social-emotional, and intellectual, the importance of the parent being the authority, consultant and designer of their child’s environment and numerous other topics.

Parents as Teachers National Center, Inc. develops the curricula, trains the Parent Educators, and certifies Parent Educators to work with parents to provide them with parenting support and information on their developing child.

Washington County Parents as Teachers has seven certified Parent Educators:  Roberta Sloat, Leni Hynes, Carol Detweiler, Jacki Robison, Diana Flannery, Cindy Hinckley, Becky Widmer and Karen Arbuckle.  If you are interested in more information about PAT please call Parents as Teachers at 319-653-7758 or 800-655-7758 and ask for Karen or e-mail karbuckle@washph.com   Washington County PAT is located at 110 N.
